24 WINES&VINES June 2017 PRODUCT NEWS Soil analysis with DNA sequencing Biome Makers' new WineSeq is a soil-testing system that employs DNA sequencing to identify and analyze the microbiome of vineyard soil to help growers and winemak- ers make decisions about how to best manage it. WineSeq uses a database of more than 2.4 million DNA sequences to detect and pre- dict problems in vineyards. The supplier reports that more than 200 wineries in 18 countries are using the product. Biome Makers also re- cently won a Most Innovative U.S. Startup Award from AgFunder, a crowdfunding service for the agri- cultural industry. wineseq.com System for monitoring soil moisture Vinduino and the Slovenian com- pany Elmitel partnered to produce the eVineyard vineyard-manage- ment system. The new system in- corporates Vinduino's sensors for monitoring soil moisture with the Elmitel vineyard-management program. The eVineyard system manages and collects data from sensors, work orders and other parameters to provide recommen- dations on irrigation, pest man- agement and other vineyard work. evineyardapp.com Plastic maturation tank Flextank reports its new DH500 is designed for long-term storage and maturation of wine and other beverages. The 500-gallon tank includes a racking elbow with a 1.5-inch valve, a 4-inch drain valve as well as a sampling valve.
