GRAPEGROWING WINE EAST
will greatly reduce the spread and impact of
these diseases.
This will be particularly important as
grape production continues to expand to new
production areas and new cultivars such as
the cold-hardy varieties released by breeding
programs. Traceability and auditing associ-
ated with certification will allow growers to
"start clean" and avoid losses associated with
propagation practices of the past.
Like the interstate highway system con-
ceived in the 1950s but not fully realized until
the late 1970s, the National Clean Plant Net-
work funding and New York certification pro-
gram are investments in infrastructure. This
infrastructure, put in place starting in 2008,
is producing products that will, over time,
enter the marketplace and provide economic
benefits for decades to come. As certified
vines make their way into commercial vine-
yards, growers will see lower risks of produc-
tion and quality losses, as well as have lower
risk of premature removal of vineyards due
to viral infections.
When the next severe winter kills vines,
growers will be confident that the replacement
vines they order and plant (if certified) will not
be carrying leafroll, tomato ringspot virus, fan
leaf or red blotch. They will get a clean start.
Tim Martinson is a senior extension associate at Cornell
University. This article is a condensed version of "Clean
Plants for the Future of the Eastern Wine and Grape
Industry," published in Appellation Cornell, Research
News from Cornell's Viticulture and Enology Program,
Issue No. 25. He extends his thanks to Foundation
Plant Services at the University of California, Davis,
and representatives of the three New York grapevine
nurseries: Eric Amberg of Grafted Grape Nursery, Fred
Merwarth of Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, and Dennis
Rak of Double A Vineyards for their participation in the
Clean Plants for the Future webinar series. Financial
support to Cornell University and the NYSDAM for the
activities described in this publication has come
through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) programs:
National Clean Plant Network; APHIS Nursery certifica-
tion, Section 10007 of the 2014 Farm Bill; and the
USDA APHIS Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey.
Additional funding to the Fuchs program was provided
by the New York Farm Viability Institute.
