Tokyo St. Francis vintner Mackey announces retirement Af ter nearly 30 years at 250,000- case St. Francis Winery & Vine- yards, Santa Rosa, Calif., winemaker Tom Mackey will retire from his position as winemaster and director of winemaking effective Decem- ber 2011. Mackey, who became St. Fran- cis' first winemaker in 1983, will remain a consultant to the winery. Heather Munden will continue as artisan winemaker and associate winemaker, and Katie Madigan will become the Sonoma County wine- maker upon retirement of current Sonoma County winemaker Dennis Borell at the end of 2011. MacPhail joins The Hess Collection Winemaker James MacPhail joined The Hess Col- lection, bringing his 4,000-case MacPhail Family Wines of Healds- burg, Calif., while continuing as founding wine- maker for Sequana Vineyards. The Hess Collection will acquire the MacPhail Family Wines brand, as well as exist- ing inventory, and MacPhail will con- tinue to be the hands-on winemaker for MacPhail Family Wines. NORTHWEST Blasted Church blesses Wendenberg The 20,000-case Blast- ed Church Vineyards of Okanagan Falls, B.C., Canada, has appointed former Su- mac Ridge winemaker Mark Wendenberg as successor to Rich- ard Kanazawa, who left Blasted Church in March. Founded in 2002, Blasted Church features varietals such as Pinot Gris, Mer- lot, Chardonnay, Syrah and Pinot Noir. Visit: blastedchurch.com. Cowhorn combines with Upper Five The 1,600-case Biodynamic-certified Cow- horn Vineyard & Garden in Applegate Valley, Ore., and Upper Five, a certified- organic vineyard, have partnered to pro- duce a new wine under a cooperative label, Sullivansteele. The new label's namesake comes from Terry Sullivan of Upper Five Vineyard and Bill and Barbara Steele of Cowhorn.
