September's Contributors P Peter Mitham eter Mitham presents the third piece in the magazine's new and ongoing series of Technical Reviews. Unlike the thousands of winery profiles published in other maga- zines each year, Technical Review articles are designed with fellow winemakers and winery owners in mind. Mitham's piece on page 26 digs into the details that make Tantalus Vine- yards an efficient, quality-minded winery from the architecture down to the tanks, pumps and even the unusual floor drains. Paul Franson A s a longtime resident of Napa Valley, many of Paul Franson's stories stem from there, and as a longtime communications professional in the business world, many of his stories also provide expert reporting and analysis of nuts and bolts financial issues in the wine industry. On page 38 of this issue, Franson covers a seminar held earlier this year in which the speakers shared advice about what winery buyers and sellers should do to prepare for a sale or purchase. Laurie Daniel L aurie Daniel's question-and-answer approach allows her subjects to speak freely. This month she digs into the benefits of crossflow filtration with Dan Karlsen, veteran winemaker at the popular Talbott Vineyards in Monterey County, Calif. In the Winemaker Interview on page 40, Karlsen tells Daniel, "In my three-plus decades of winemaking experience, I've come to the conclusion that filtra- tion has a very minimal negative effect on wine flavor, if any." Deborah Grossman alk about a tough assignment—Deborah Grossman enjoyed dinner at Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux and then wrote an opinion piece inspired by it. The experience was wonderful, as you might ex- pect, but the point that Grossman brought home was not how to make great Bordeaux, but how to conduct great winemaker din- T ners. In her Viewpoint piece on page 66, Grossman dissects her evening at the chateau with the purpose of showing North American vintners how to impress guests. September's Cover Wines & Vines' Northwest correspondent Peter Mitham snapped this image of a sleek drain system while researching his Technical Review about Tantalus Vineyards in Kelow- na, British Columbia. The inch-wide crevice runs nearly the entire length of the floor in the production area, which angles towards the opening at an imperceptible 2º slope. 4 Wines & Vines sePTeMBeR 2011 A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
