24 WINES&VINES March 2016 New lees filter Velo-Acciai's new lees filter, which won a new technology award at the recent SIMEI expo in Milan, Italy, is now available in the United States through Scott Laboratories. The cross-flow filter can separate juice or wine from up to 60% sol- ids by employing a special vibra- tory bowl and sintered stainless steel modules with a high degree of resistance to thermal shock. The machine can filter without get- ting clogged by seeds, oak chips and Bentonite, and the filtration cycle causes little dissolved oxy- gen pickup or reduction in sulfur dioxide. scottlab.com App to assess powdery mildew on grapes Researchers at the University of Adelaide have developed a new app to help growers assess pow- dery mildew on grapes. The PMapp is designed to enable a user to quickly assess the sever- ity of powdery mildew on each bunch of grapes by matching what they see on the field to an image in the app's data- base. The app calcu- lates the proportion of bunches af- fected (the disease inci- dence) and surface area affected (se- verity) and reports the data in a spreadsheet for subsequent anal- ysis. The app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. adelaide.edu.au Protein stability test BSG is now offering the Proteo- test analysis that it claims mea- sures heat stability more accurately and faster than exist- ing tests. The test is based on protein-phenolic interactions and measures unstable colloidal ma- terial. BSG offers kits containing test tubes, sufficient reagent and buffer for 80 tests. bsgwine.com 'Smart-security' closure NXP Semiconductors and Guala Closures Group collaborated to de- velop a new wine closure featuring "smart-security" measures to deter counterfeits and tampering. The near-field communication (NFC)- enabled stoppers from Guala Clo- sures will feature opening detection and logging technology to give clear indication of an unauthorized opening of the bottle. Consumers New press offers new label options Labeltronix added a new Digi- con Series 3 press with a "Big Foot" flatbed module from AB Graphic International to offer its winery clients more label options. The Big Foot hot foil and embossing/stamping module uses 50 tons of pressure to lay multiple foil colors and "rais- es embossing to a new level." The machine features a rotatable foil head that can foil across and along the web, offering a wider array of foil options and deeper embossing and debossing. "The ability to lay down up to three hot-stamp foils and still emboss in a single pass gives us greater options," said Labeltronix general manager Shawn Plunkett. labeltronix.com Product News Latest offerings and announcements
