NORTHWEST New GM at Balboa Tammie Buchanan-Herron is the new general man- ager and controller at Balboa Winery in Walla Walla, Wash. Buchanan- Herron will help oversee all day-to-day operations and long-term planning with winery partners Tom and Amy Glase, Bob and Sha- ron Lewis and George and Elaine Killian. Buchanan- Herron will also manage all financial and business ser- vice activities for the win- ery. Prior to joining Balboa, Buchanan-Herron worked for 10 years as controller for Abeja winery, which is also located in Walla Walla. Ghost Hill hires new winemaker Eric Hamacher is the new winemaker at Ghost Hill Cellars in Carlton, Ore. Hamacher replaces Re- becca Pittock-Shouldis, who had to leave the winery because of military service. Hamacher is the co-founder of Carlton Winemaker Studio and pro- duces wine under his own label, Hamacher Wines. Burrowing Owl founder honored James Wyse, owner and founder of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery in the Okan- agan Valley of British Co- lumbia, received Canada's EY Entrepreneur of the Year award in the hospital- ity and tourism category. Wyse accepted the award in a Sept. 24 ceremony in Vancouver, B.C. Crimson to open Seattle tasting room Crimson Wine Group plans to open a tasting room featuring wines from Washington and Oregon in Seattle's Pioneer Square. Set to open by the end of the year, The Estates Wine Room will offer wines from Double Canyon in Wash- ington's Horse Heaven Hills AVA and Archery Summit from the Wil- lamette Valley in Oregon. The Estates Wine Room will be located on Occiden- tal Mall at 307 Occidental Ave. South. The space will include a standing tasting bar alongside seating and a wine retail area. Crimson is based in Napa, Calif., and owns and manages more than 870 vineyard acres and a several estate wineries and brands. CENTRAL Michigan battered by rough vintage About 90% of Northwest Michigan's wine grape crop and 60% to 70% of the crop in the south- western half of the state may have been wiped out because of winter cold damage, spring frost and a hailstorm in August. Duke Elsner, small fruit educator for Michigan State Univer- sity, estimates that winter cold damage reduced vi- able buds by 50%, and the spring frost trimmed the remainder by half. A summer hailstorm then damaged what grapes the vines did manage to pro- duce. According to Wines Vines Analytics, Michigan is home to 145 wineries that produce 1.1 million cases of wine per year. The Michigan Wine Com- mission reports the state is home to 2,650 acres of wine grape vineyards. EAST Finger Lakes wine used in papal services O-Neh-Da Vineyard pro- vided the wines used at papal services during the recent visit of Pope Francis to the United States.
