Line changeover requirement time "My goal is to have a changeover com- pleted in less than one hour when chang- ing from cork to screw cap or vice versa," says Shakib Ali, bottling line manager. "There are many variables that go into a changeover. Sometimes the bottle mold is the same and requires only a label and capsule change and we have converted the line in as little as 20 minutes. An extensive changeover would be chang- ing bottle mold (meaning change parts on all machines need to be changed) and wine change. We are working on this as a team and hope to have this process down to less than one hour." "One unique feature of the bottling line is the universal starwheels and auto- matic height adjustments that are pre- programmed via bottle mold as well as preprogrammed/saved label formats on the labeler. For every piece of equipment on the bottling line, we are able to create and save a specific format for each prod- uct allowing operators to simply select the correct program and go." Scott Laboratories is the supplier/ installer of the LangeTwins bottling line. PWV LangeTwins has a DB-80 PSA (pressure swing adsorbtion) nitrogen generator. This unit takes compressed air and filters out all the oxygen and delivers dry, USDA-FDA sterile nitrogen gas on demand. It plugs into a 110-volt outlet and uses 150 watts of electricity. The DB-80 produces 5,445 SCFH (standard cubic feet per hour) of pure (99.5%) nitrogen gas and has one nitrogen holding tank. Maintenance consists of changing two filters once per year, a 10-minute job costing $350. The winery has a water-filtration system supplied by Advanced 03 Technologies that is comprised of an oxygen-based corona discharge ozone system with oxidation reduction potential (ORP) control, a contact tank, two auto-backwashed media filters and a 10,000-gallon storage tank. Upon a call for water by the storage tank float level system, a valve opens at the stor- age tank, allowing water to flow from the winery water supply (a well) to the ozone system. A flow switch triggers the ozone venturi booster pump and ozone system to begin operation. The ozone system injects ozone via a venturi injector into the main water flow that goes to the contact tank where excess air is eliminated. The ozone- infused water circulates for four minutes in the contact tank, killing bacteria and converting iron and manganese into their solid forms. At the outlet of the contact tank, an ORP sensor measures the ozone level in the water and adjusts the ozone power output to maintain a minimum of 650 mV (World Health Organization level for safe drink - ing water). The water then flows through the media filters to remove any particu- lates down to 10 microns and then flows on to the storage tank.
