August 2015 WINES&VINES 21 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Submissions sought for vintage award The 2015 Vintage Report In- novation Award competition is now seeking submissions for the award that honors in- novation and sustainability in viticulture through a proj- ect conducted during this year's harvest. To be eligible for the Vintage Report Inno- vation Award presented by Bank of the West, projects must be used during the 2015 vintage (though they may have started earlier), and the techniques must be implemented in or be exportable to Napa Valley terroirs. The winner will be announced at Fruition Sci- ences' 2015 Vintage Report conference in January 2016. The most recent winning project was a collaborative experiment by E. & J. Gallo Winery and IBM that used a variable-rate irrigation sys- tem across separate quad- rants of a 31-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. J. Lohr hires winemaker for white wines J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines of San Jose named Kristen Barnhisel winemaker for white wines. Barnhisel has worked in winemaking for more than two decades and most recently was the quality control manager at Inglenook, where she was charged with ensuring wine quality of the Rubicon and the Blancaneaux wines. In addition to her new role at J. Lohr, Barnhisel serves as a director for the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. New director of winemaking for Murrieta's Well Wente Family Estates of Livermore appointed Robbie Meyer as its new director of winemaking for Murrieta's Well winery. Prior to joining Murrieta's Well, Meyer worked at Peter Michael Winery, Lewis Cellars and Jericho Canyon Vineyards in addi- tion to several consulting jobs. Philip Wente co- founded Murrieta's Well with winemaker Sergio Traverso in 1990. Spottswoode names assistant winemaker James Revie was pro- moted to the post of assistant winemaker at Spottswoode Winery in St. Helena. Revie will work alongside Spottswoode's vineyard manager and winemaker Aron Weinkauf to oversee management of the estate vineyards and winemaking. A native of Australia, Revie worked at wineries there before com- ing to the United States for the 2012 harvest at Spottswoode and Araujo Estate Wines. He returned to California to join the Spottswoode staff full time in 2014.
