CALIFO R N I A Halls buy Anderson Valley vineyard Craig and Kathryn Walt Hall, the owners of Walt and Hall wine companies, announced their purchase of the 35-acre Anderson Creek vineyard near Boonville in the Anderson Valley. The vineyard, planted to 33 acres of Pinot Noir and 2 acres of Chardonnay, has been a source for the Walt Pinot Noir program. Details: waltwines.com. Expansion, Sapporo Osaka ma promotion at Rack & Riddle Custom-crush supplier Rack & Riddle Wine Services announced it secured an agreement to lease 67,000 square Tokyo feet of production space Mark Nagoya Garaventa in the Sonoma County town of Healdsburg. Napa Valley's Duckhorn Vineyards purchased the company's current location in Hopland (Mendocino County) earlier this year. In addition to the new location, Rack & Riddle announced that Mark Garaventa, the company's former vice president of business development, had been promoted to the post of general manager. Napa Vintners members visit Ontario Representatives from 40 Napa Valley wineries traveled to eastern Canada in October to visit Montreal and Toronto as part of a weeklong series of trade tastings and educational events featuring Napa Valley wines. New director on Cakebread board Gary Pruitt, the president and CEO of the Associated Press, is a new member of the board of directors for Cakebread Cellars 24 W in es & V i ne s D EC E M BE R 20 13 in Rutherford. Pruitt assumed his current position with the AP in 2012, after previously serving on the news organization's board. Cakebread's board is comprised of four members of the founding Cakebread family and three other directors: Robert H. Smiley, Jack Tankersley and Maggie Wilderotter. Winemaker Peter Kruse dies Winemaker Peter Kruse died Sept. 20 at age 44 from lung cancer. Kruse grew up working at his family's winery in Gilroy, and in the 1990s he brewed beer for Gordon Biersch brewPeter ery. Kruse returned to Kruse winemaking, working first for Story Winery in Amador County and then for Roche Winery in Sonoma. Kruse's passion for wine never faded, and he continued to consult during his 14 months of cancer treatment. Truett-Hurst releases 'California Square' Truett-Hurst Inc. of Healdsburg released three new wines packaged in what the company described as "retro/chic" square bottles. Created by the design firm Stranger & Stranger, the bottles are intended to evoke the look of classic spirits bottles. The current release includes a Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and red blend from the Paso Robles AVA. Details: truethurstinc.com. Grower Bacigalupi dies Charles Bacigalupi, who owned the Sonoma County vineyard from which Chateau Montelena sourced the Chardonnay that took top honors in the famed 1976 "Judgment of Paris" tasting, died Nov. 1. He was 89. Bacigalupi was born in San- ta Rosa and served in the Navy during World War II. After his military service, he worked as a dentist in Healdsburg and bought a 121-acre ranch, where he planted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1964. Jess Jackson biography released Jackson Family Wines announced the release of the authorized biography of the company's founder, Jess Stonestreet Jackson, entitled "A Man and His Mountain" by Edward Humes. The book recounts Jackson's ascent to leader in the wine industry as well as his passion for horse racing. N O RTH WEST OLCC director hired The Oregon Liquor Control Commission appointed Steve Marks to the position of executive director for the agency that oversees Oregon's state-managed liquor stores and levies state beer and wine taxes. Marks has nearly 30 years of state government experience including a stint as chief of staff for the governor's office. The OLCC board also voted in October to allow five of the state's liquor stores to sell beer and wine in addition to spirits. Promotion at Adelsheim Vineyard Kim Bellingar was promoted to the position of director of business operations at Adelsheim Vineyard in Newberg, Ore. Washington launches campaign and app The Washington State Wine group announced the start of its "The Recommendeuer" national marketing campaign and associated iPad app. Steve Warner, president of Washington State Wine, said in a statement the campaign uses "tonguein-cheek humor" to provide an accurate portrayal of the state's industry as well as information about the state's wines and grapegrowing regions.
