November 2018 WINES&VINES 95
WINE EAST GRAPEGROWING
day, participants went by bus to visit three Swed-
ish vineyards north of Alnarp, and then relocated
to Copenhagen that night.
The final two days, Aug. 2-3, featured a day
of sessions at Copenhagen University in the
Frederiksberg area in Copenhagen, followed
by a day touring three Danish vineyards near
the Baltic Sea west of Copenhagen. Two wine
and grape-growing experts from the United
States attended the conference and reported
back some of their observations for growers
and winemakers in North America's cold-cli-
mate regions.
Sweden and Denmark are new to the grape
and wine industry, not because of very cold
winter temperatures but on account of the
low number of growing degree days. There
are now approximately 50 commercial vine-
yards in Sweden, mostly in the coastal areas
of southern Sweden and on the Baltic islands
of Öland and Gotland. Denmark had 100 com-
mercial grape growers by 2015, and the coun-
try's wineries are primarily in areas along the
coast and islands.
Summers in Scandinavian countries have
long days and short nights; high temperatures
are normally in the low 70s. While the summer
in 2017 was the coolest in 155 years, this year
Sweden experienced a widespread drought,
accompanied by some major wildfires, and
high temperatures that were consistently in
the mid- to upper 80s in July.
"Their high daytime temperatures were
unique," Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, professor
of plant sciences at North Dakota State Uni-
versity, told Wines & Vines after the conference.
She noted that the typical problem in both
Swedish and Danish vineyards is getting the
Netted Solaris vines at Flädie Mat och Vingård.
