Barret will work alongside director of winemaking Penelope Gadd-Coster. Barret, a native of France, is a former lecturer for the Institut Oenologique de Champagne. NORTHWEST Watermill hires commercial director Alex Hedges is the new commer- cial director of Watermill Winery in The Rocks of Milton-Freewater AVA. Hedges is the former na- tional sales manager for Hedges Family Estate, regional manager for Sonoma, Calif.-based V2 Wine Group and most recently was the national sales manager for Roco Winery in the Willamette Valley of Oregon Washington auction raises $160,000 The Washington Wine Industry Foundation's February auction in Kennewick, Wash., drew more than 400 people from the state's wine industry and raised more than $160,000 to support the founda- tion's work to fund research and scholarships. Auction items included international cruises and trips, wine- maker dinners, magnums of Wash- ington wine and other items. CENTRAL Cooper's Hawk hires production, sourcing managers David Patneaude is the new vice president of winery operations, and Brit Zotovich is the new supply relations and sourcing manager of Cooper's Hawk Winery & Restau- rants. Patneaude previously worked at Precept Wine where he worked for more than a decade managing winery operations. Zotovich is a winemaker who previously worked at Terravant Wine Company located in California's Central Coast. The two will be focused on continuing to increase production while adher- ing to quality control standards. The Chicago-based company runs a chain of restaurants that also fea- ture tasting rooms and retail outlets for Cooper's Hawk wines. Accord- ing to the company, wine produc- tion has increased nearly 40% in the past three years based largely on a wine club that has grown to more than 300,000 members. Lynfred Winery promotes new tasting room manager Gregory Hayes is the new manager of Lynfred Winery's Naperville, Ill., tasting room called Tasting Devine Cellars. Hayes joined Lynfred Win- ery, which is based in Roselle, Ill., in 2000 and is a graduate of the Culi- nary Institute of America's Acceler- ated Wine and Beverage Program. EAST Virginia grower, winery groups hand out awards The Virginia Wineries Association announced the winners of the Gover- nor's Cup Virginia Wine Competition as well as the state's Wine Person of the Year award and Lifetime Achieve- ment Award. The Virginia Vineyards Association presented its "Grower of the Year" award, and also named a Lifetime Achievement Award winner which is only conferred every five years. The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Christopher Hill, a grower and consultant, who during the past 35 years has had a major impact on the Virginia wine industry. This year's Grower of the Year award was presented to Bill Tonkins, vineyard manager at Veritas Vineyard and Winery in Afton, Va. The winery association's Governor's Cup Brit Zotovich
