24 WINES&VINES September 2017 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS NORTHWEST ASEV hands out $100,000 in scholarships The American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) awarded $100,000 in scholarships at its 2017 Annual Conference in Bellevue, Wash. The 37 viticulture and enol- ogy students who received scholar- ships were honored along with the 2017 Best Student Presentation award winners at a reception at the end of the conference. Of the 37 re- cipients, two students—Megan Hall of Cornell University in New York and Sydney Morgan of the Univer- sity of British Columbia—were the first to receive ASEV's new Presi- dents' Award for Scholarship, which recognizes students who exceeded scholarship expectations and show exceptional leadership potential. Nielsen pegs Chateau Ste. Michelle as top brand in food stores Chateau Ste. Michelle, Washing- ton's largest wine company and one of the largest wine producers in the United States, is the No. 1 premium table wine brand in food stores nationwide, according to scan data from market-research firm Nielsen Co. The ranking is based on sales volume data from the 52 weeks ending June 17. The company pro- duces 3.8 million cases per year, according to the Wines Vines Ana- lytics winery database. CENTRAL Stone Hill takes Missouri Governor's Cup At the 2017 Missouri Wine Compe- tition, Stone Hill Winery's 2015 Nor- ton won the Missouri Governor's Cup, the highest honor bestowed by the competition. The winner was selected from nine Best of Class honorees chosen from the 308 wines tasted during the two-day competition designed to recognize and promote Missouri state wines. Stone Hill Winery also took home the C.V. Riley Best of Class Dry Red and Best Norton awards. This is the third time Stone Hill Winery has won those three honors, also winning in 2013 and 2014 with its 2011 Estate Bottled Norton and 2012 Cross J Vineyard Norton, re- spectively. The other Best of Class honorees for this year included: Adam Puchta Winery, St. James Winery, Augusta Winery, Noboleis Vineyards and Pirtle Winery. New specialist in New Mexico Gill Giese is the new extension viticul- ture specialist at New Mexico State University. Giese previously was the winemaker at Shelton Vineyards in Dobson, N.C., and was the lead in- structor for viticulture and enology at Surry Community College, which is also in Dobson. Giese will work out of the Agricultural Science Center in Los Lunas and also teach through NMSU Extension Plant Services as an assis- tant professor. EAST New York grape foundation hires member-relations staffer Valerie Venezia-Ross is the new director of member relations and development for the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. Venezia-Ross joins the foundation after spending nearly 20 years with the New York Council of Nonprofits. She will be or- ganizing a series of meetings around the state after harvest to hear from members of the foundation.
