McGrath graduated from the University of California, Davis, in 1978 with a degree in fermenta- tion science and worked at Grgich Hills Estate, William Hill Estate and Charles Krug before joining Villa Mt. Eden in 1982. He joined Conn Creek in 1986 and was promoted to head winemaker in 2007. During his time at the winery, McGrath's wines earned five spots in Wine Spectator magazine's "Top 100" wines. McGrath worked with his replacement, new head winemaker Elizabeth DeLouise-Gant, through mid-August. DeLouise-Gant previ- ously was the assistant winemaker at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and prior to that she was assistant winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard. Sonoma Winegrowers hire new communications manager Melissa Vogt is the new education and communications manager for the Sonoma County Winegrowers based in Santa Rosa. Vogt previ- ously was the deputy editor for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate newsletter and holds a master's degree in rhetoric and composition from Sonoma State University. New winemaker at Cambria Jill DelaRiva Russell is the new winemaker for Cambria Estate Vineyard & Winery in the Santa Maria Valley AVA. Russell will work with former Cambria winemaker Denise Shurtleff, who has been promoted to general manager, and will supervise all aspects of wine- making. Prior to joining Cambria, Russell worked as assistant wine- maker at Paul Lato Wines in Santa Maria and was formerly assistant winemaker at Stephen Ross Wine Cellars in San Luis Obispo. New hire, promotion at Hahn Hahn Family Wines, a Santa Lucia Highlands-based winery, hired Hahn alum Juan Jose Verdina as winemaker and promoted Megan McCollough to winemaker for the Smith & Hook brand. Verdina and McCollough will report to Paul Clif- ton, director of winemaking at Hahn Family Wines, who is in his 14th vintage with the winery. Verdina will focus on production of Hahn and Boneshaker brands and has more than 15 years of winemaking experience, starting in 2002 during his first harvest with Hahn Family Wines. Before returning to Hahn, he was head of winemaking for Jamieson Ranch Vineyards in Napa Valley. McCollough, winemaker for Smith & Hook, will be responsible for the winery's duo of Central Coast red wines paying homage to the Hahn family's first Monterey County properties, known today as the Smith Vineyard and Hook Vine- yard. McCollough started at Hahn in 2011 as an enologist. Dreaming Tree raises $1 million for charity The Dreaming Tree Wines, a California wine label produced by Constellation Brands and devel- oped by winemaker Sean McKen- zie and musician Dave Matthews, announced it reached its goal to raise $1 million for The Wilder- ness Society and Living Lands & Waters. The brand is certified by the California Sustainable Wine- growing Alliance and consistently donates proceeds from its sales to environmental organizations. Hirsch opens tasting room Hirsch Vineyards, located in the far western Sonoma Coast, opened its first tasting room in Healdsburg on Aug. 1. The tast- ing room, open by appointment only, will feature culinary pairings provided by SHED and Andante Dairy. Designed by Marie Hirsch, the tasting room is located in the Old Roma Station on Front Street. Jill DelaRiva Russell
