CO VER S T OR Y E CONOMICS Jim Taylor, lease manager with Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Hansel Leasing, said leasing is ideal from a cash-flow perspec- tive. He said this finance method is used for nearly everything in the wine industry from tractors to forklifts as well as tanks, crush pad equipment, barrels and bottling lines. "Stainless steel tanks have a long amortiza- tion schedule because of the expected life of the asset," Taylor said. "You can take accel- erated depreciation with a lease and take the full write-off over a shorter period of time, to a maximum of five years on a lease." A lease could also be a quicker and easier route toward financing as well, especially as there's less cash up front. "If you had some difficulty we're definitely a viable financing source," Taylor said. He added that because all credit decisions and contracts are done in-house, "We can make a decision more quickly than a bank." Taylor said Hansel leases start at $15,000. When evaluating potential les- sees it always comes down to if they have "good credit and positive cash flow."
