Faces& Forums ASEV-ES Gives Awards and Scholarships T raverse City, Mich.—Dr. G. Stanley Howell, professor emeritus of viticul- ture and enology at Michigan State University, received the Lifetime Achieve- ment Award at the American Society for Enology and Viticulture-Eastern Section banquet held July 18 in Traverse City. The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Dr. James A. Wolpert, who was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the industry in California, Michigan and other winegrowing regions in eastern North America. Recipients of ASEV-ES scholarships included Melissa Aellen, Cornell University; Christina Bavougian, University of Nebraska; Charles Frohman, Cornell University; Cain Hickey, Virginia Tech; Lindsay Jordan, Cor- nell University; Mark Nisbet, Cornell Univer- sity; Jennifer Savits, Iowa State University; and Amanda Stewart, Purdue University. The best student paper in enology award, sponsored by Lallemand Inc., went to Amanda Stewart of Purdue University; and the award for the best paper in viticulture, sponsored by the National Grape Coopera- tive, was given to Sarah Bowman of South- ern Illinois University. Fritz Westover of Texas AgriLife Extension is the new Eastern Section chairperson.
