May's Contributors W Paul Franson ines & Vines' senior correspondent Paul Franson files his second article about flash sales sites in this issue (page 16) to accompany The Flash Report, which made its debut as a regular department in our February issue. This time Franson's angle is to inter- view vintners and winery sales and marketing people from wineries that have experience selling through flash sites to see how effective the discount-oriented, time-limited, email-driven companies have been for their sales efforts. Laurie Daniel or her monthly Q & A interview (page 42), Laurie Daniel chose a winemaker for whom wine packaging—the theme of this issue—is a special interest. Joel Gott is a winemaker, owner of Joel Gott Wines, partner in Three Thieves wines and, as if that weren't enough, proprietor of Gott's Roadside restaurants. F Daniel asks about Gott's extensive experience with alternative packaging—from glass jugs to cartons to screwcaps—and uncov- ers the story behind the bucking bronco label on The Show wines. Chris Stamp C hris Stamp is a winemaker in New York's Finger Lakes region. From his own experi- ence and a past position as enology extension associate in Ohio he knows all too well that when and how to use sulfur dioxide are critical questions for most every winemaker. Stamp answers those questions in the first install- tion are the subjects of part one. Cliff Ohmart Wines & Vines columnist since 1998, Cliff Ohmart is an expert on the topic of sus- tainable wine growing. But he admits in his Vineyard View column (page 77) that he has never written in depth about one of the three important goals of sustainability: social eq- uity. Ohmart asks, "Why are human resource A issues in the wine industry...so challenging and often consciously or unconsciously avoided?" He answers that question in a way that any grapegrower may find helpful. May's Cover Bold color, graphic illustration and dynamic shape make wine labels stand out in a retail setting. This issue's cover story also em- phasizes the bottom line and importance of planning. Stacy Ventura photographed labels printed by ASL Print FX for Adler Fels Winery and Pelee Island Winery.
