BUENA VISTA TIMELINE
1856 1863 1878 1941 1968
UPI executive Frank
Bartholomew pur-
chases the estate
after seeing a notice
of its pending sale
in a public auction
while visiting San
Francisco. The Bar-
tholomews begin
producing wine
under the Buena
Vista label after the
end of World War II.
The Bartholomews sell the historic winery and Buena
Vista brand to Vernon Underwood, a founder of Young's
Market Co. Underwood later purchases the Carneros
property that would be the site of the modern winery and
vineyards that supported the Buena Vista brand. Frank
Bartholomew retains most of the Buena Vista estate, and
in 1973 he founds Hacienda Wine Cellars, which becomes
Bartholomew Park Winery in 1994.
Haraszthy forms the public
Buena Vista Vinicultural Soci-
ety to raise funds to expand
the estate vineyards and wine
production. The society's other
investors force Haraszthy out
in 1868, and "the Count" dies
a year later.
Without a sufficient market for its wines, the society
disbands, and Robert and Kate Johnson purchase the estate.
The Johnsons leave the estate idle for decades before
donating it to the Catholic Church. The property eventually
comes under the control of the State of California.
