May 2015 WINES&VINES 27 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA New winemaker at Trefethen Bryan Kays was promoted to the post of winemaker at Trefethen Family Vineyards, replacing Zeke Neeley. Kays joined the Napa Val- ley winery in 2006 as an intern and was the assistant winemaker before his most recent promotion. Dan Blakely has been promoted to assistant winemaker, and Brendan Brambila is the winery's new direc- tor of viticulture. Cuvaison sells Calistoga facility Cuvaison Wine Estates announced the sale of its Calistoga winery and tasting room to the St. Helena, Calif.-based real estate develop- ment firm Criswell-Radovan LLC. According to the news release an- nouncing the deal, the new owners will continue to operate the winery as a custom-crush facility with the same production and management team under the name Fairwinds Estate Winery. The Calistoga win- ery had been Cuvaison's home from 1969 until 2004, when the company built a new winery in the Carneros AVA. Reece promoted to winemaker at Pedroncelli Montse Reece is the new wine- maker at Pedroncelli Winery. Reece joined the winery in 2007 and worked alongside John Pe- droncelli for seven vintages before he passed away this year. ASEV honors E.B. 'Pete' Downs E.B. "Pete" Downs will receive the American Society for Enology and Viticulture's (ASEV) Merit Award for outstanding contribution to the society and the industry. The organization will present Downs with the award June 18, at the 66th ASEV National Conference in Portland, Ore. Downs worked with legislators, regulators and other members of the industry on a local, state, national and inter- national level in his position as the external affairs senior vice presi- dent for Kendall-Jackson Winery. Before taking that role, Downs was the vice president and wine- maker for sparkling wines at Cha- teau St. Jean from 1979 to 1992. Downs served as ASEV president from 1991 to 1992 and has been an active member since 1973. Diogo-Draper promoted at Artesa Ana Diogo-Draper is the new director of winemaking at Artesa Vineyards & Winery. Diogo-Draper joined Artesa in 2013 and is now the first woman to hold the top winemaking post at the winery, which opened in 1991 and is owned by the Spanish firm Bode- gas y Viñedos Codorniu Raventos. Diogo-Draper is a native of Portu- gal and is also fluent in Spanish, French and English. She came to California in 2005 for a harvest intern position at Rutherford Hill Winery, where she rose through the ranks to become assistant winemaker. Beringer named chief winemaker at Beringer Beringer Vineyards announced Mark Beringer—a direct descen- dent of Jacob Beringer, who was one of the founders of the winery in 1876—is the winery's new chief winemaker. Beringer Vineyards is owned by the Australian company Treasury Wine Estates. Beringer worked previously at Artesa Vine- yards & Winery and Duckhorn Vineyards as well as other Napa County wineries. Beringer winery's chief winemaker, Laurie Hook, is moving into the role of winemaker emeritus.
