TECHNICAL SPOTLIGHT WINEMAKING April 2018 WINES&VINES 29 ers, Alexander Valley has been an integral part of the wine company's long history. Duncan's father, Raymond Twomey Duncan, founded Silver Oak with Justin Meyer, and one of Ray- mond Duncan's first vineyard investments was in Alexander Valley. The family has also owned the 80-acre Miraval Vineyard, down the road from the new winery, since 1987. "This neigh- borhood has been in our DNA, part of Silver Oak, really since the beginning," Duncan said. Plans for a new winery in Alexander Valley started to form after the Duncans first had to rebuild the Napa Valley winery that was exten- sively damaged by a fire in 2006. The new winery offered ample space for winemaking and hospitality to support growth as part of a 50-year plan. It also opened in 2008, just in time for the recession. KEY POINTS Solely used for high-end Cabernet Sauvi- gnon wine production, Silver Oak's new winery is also a sustainable facility. Built to grow, the winery currently pro- duces around 80,000 cases. A new tasting room features public and private areas, commercial kitchen and space for events.
