20 WINES&VINES March 2018 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Winemaker changes at Quady Michael Blaylock has retired as winemaker of Quady Winery in Madera after more than 30 years with the company. Replacing Blaylock is Darin Peterson, who was promoted to the post of lead winemaker at the winery that pro- duces more than 100,000 cases per year of Moscato wines and vermouth. Peterson joined Quady in 2005. The company also an- nounced it is close to completing a 22,000-square-foot expansion that will enable it to significantly increase wine production. Beck named CEO at Coppola Corey Beck has been promoted from president and director of winemaking to CEO of The Family Coppola wine company in Gey- serville. Beck has more than 20 years of experience in the wine in- dustry and joined Coppola in 1998 as assistant winemaker. Beck is a past president of the Sonoma County Vintners. In his new role, Beck will oversee Francis Ford Coppola Winery and Virginia Dare Winery in Geyserville, the newly launched Great Women Spirits company and Café Zoetrope in San Francisco. Burgess Cellars promotes winemaker to GM Kelly Woods has been promoted from winemaker to general manager at Burgess Cellars in Napa Valley. Woods had been the head wine- maker of the family-owned winery since 2013 and in her new role will oversee all winery operations and strategic planning. In addition to vineyard and winemaking opera- tions, Woods will manage hospitality, sales, marketing and administration. Sonoma Valley grower dies George MacLeod, one of the early leaders of a revitalized Sonoma Valley wine industry, died Jan. 21 at age 96. MacLeod purchased a 50-acre ranch above Kenwood, Calif., in 1974. The property came to be known as Indian Springs Ranch and would later support the MacLeod Family Vineyard winery that opened in 2005. MacLeod helped establish the Sonoma Val- ley Vintners & Growers Alliance and was the group's first president. In 2015, he was inducted into the Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance Hall of Fame. MacLeod's foray into the wine business came after successful careers in the oil and technology industries as well as service in the U.S. Army during World War II. MacLeod is survived by his wife of 69 years, Greta, four children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Richard Kunde dies Richard Kunde, a member of one of Sonoma Valley's most prominent ranching families, died Jan. 18 in Santa Rosa, Calif., at age 75.
