Key Indicators Complete data is available at winesandvines.com/metrics. S ales of U.S. wine totaled $3.7 billion in September, market-research firm bw166 reported, up 3% from a year earlier. September's tally was the second- strongest month in the past year and helped boost 12-month sales of U.S. wines 4% to $40.9 billion. Total wine sales (both domestic products and packaged imports) rose 4% in September 2017 versus a year earlier to $62 billion. Packaged imports experienced stron- ger growth at 6%. Bulk imports continue to strengthen, rising 27% in September 2017 versus a year earlier and 14% in the most recent 12 months. Do- mestic sparkling wine saw sales up 9% in September and 7% in the previous 12 months. The recent gains for bulk imports reverse sev- eral months of declines and remain notable despite representing just 5% of U.S. wine sales. A year ago, consumers were gravitating to domestic wines, and 12-month sales of bulk imports were down 4%. This year, bulk im- ports are filling a niche for affordable wines that vintners can't fill with more expensive California juice. —Peter Mitham U.S. Wine Sales Winery Job Index MONTH September 2017 191 September 2016 203 12 MONTHS September 2017 293 September 2016 282 MONTHLY INDEX 4% Packaged Wine Imports Boost U.S. Wine Sales 3% in September Source: winejobs.com Winejobs.com Index 500 400 300 200 100 0 2017 2016 Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep -6% METRICS 10 WINES&VINES November 2017 Off-Premise Sales IRI Channels MONTH September 2017 $663M September 2016 $633M 12 MONTHS September 2017 $8,784M September 2016 $8,498M MONTHLY SALES U.S. Wine Sales MONTH September 2017 $3,654M September 2016 $3,535M 12 MONTHS September 2017 $40,874M September 2016 $39,355M MONTHLY SALES 5% 3% 4% 3% Direct-to-Consumer Shipments MONTH September 2017 $222M September 2016 $198M 12 MONTHS September 2017 $2,570M September 2016 $2,197M MONTHLY SHIPMENTS 17% 12% Source: , Wines Vines Analytics.
