One of them is that of direct-to-consumer sales strategist. In his Viewpoint piece on page 28, Haas argues that, at least in the case of his winery, the opening of new states to direct shipments in recent years has not hurt sales through local distributors, but helped them. For instance, two years after Maryland opened to DtC shipments, Tablas Creek saw a 161% increase in sales there. Read his account for ideas on how your winery could grow both types of sales. Wines & Vines managing editor Kate Lavin held down the fort during production of this issue, as many staff members and contributors who live in California wine country were preparing for evacuations from the flames that scorched large areas in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties. She wrote five bylined articles for winesandvines.com in the week after the inferno started Oct. 8, and much of that reporting appears here in the print edition news section (pages 14-19). Lavin has been with the magazine since 2008 and lives in San Francisco. The editor of the Wine East section is Linda Jones McKee, who has served the eastern wine industry for decades as a journalist and several years as a winery owner. She wrote a major article for this is- sue that tells the backstory of how two eastern viticulture researchers identified the spread of a fungus, Pestalotiopsis, that now threatens vineyards from Missouri to the East Coast. Turn to page 92 to read "Identifying Pestalotiopsis in the Vineyard and the Lab." NOVEMBER 2017 REELING FROM WILDFIRES Northern California Regions Scorched ON THE COVER Paradise Ridge Winery owner Rene Byck surveys what remains of his winemaking facility in Santa Rosa, Calif., on Oct. 10. Photographer Josh Edelson captured the image less than 48 hours after the start of several fires that would eventually kill dozens and destroy thousands of structures across several Northern California regions. QUESTION FOR NOVEMBER: What was the most valuable help you got during the fires? Sattie Clark Owner/sales and marketing Backbone Vineyard & Winery Redwood Valley, Calif. During the fire, our neighbor's nephew, John Wilson Jr., drove from Willits to protect his family's property. After almost everyone else in our neighbor- hood had evacuated, he stayed for hours, directing firefighters to our property and showing them access points to the vineyard. We feel certain that his quick thinking and coura- geous action saved our house and shop. Martha Barra Owner Redwood Valley Vineyards Redwood Valley, Calif. The amazing firefighters worked so hard to contain the fires, as well as our local sheriff, who spearheaded regular update meetings to keep our commu- nity abreast of the situation. We were also so fortunate to have the support of our local farm bureau and our dedicated employees, who helped us coordinate efforts once we were able to get back into the fields to pick. Bruce Lundquist Managing member Rack & Riddle Geyserville, Calif. Our dedicated employees who, despite their own difficult circumstances—in many cases being displaced, and in at least one case with no home to return to—continued to show up for work and take care of our clients, who themselves were facing tremendous challenges. We also received very great cooperation from the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department, the CHP and of course the firefighters! REE SLOCUM JOSH EDELSON/AFP/GETTY IMAGES
