26 WINES&VINES September 2017 PRODUCT NEWS Optical sorter for grapes Scott Laboratories is now offering the Armbruster Grapesort optical- sorter machine. The Grapesort is the latest addition to Armbruster's portfolio and is designed to eject material other than grapes as well as improve wine quality through sorting based on multiple criteria. A high-resolution, four-channel camera with color and near-infra- red capabilities can detect flawed berries, and the machine also fea- tures LED lamps that alternate be- tween white and infrared LED. The supplier also reports the machine is easy to clean and maintain be- cause of an open-housing design and pneumatic quick-release con- veyor belt. scottlab.com Updated oxygen analyzer Wine Quality Solutions, a brand of the Vinventions company that also owns Nomacorc, released an updated version of its oxygen an- alyzer. The NomaSense PolyScan P200 features an enhanced dis- play and touchscreen control that is portable and can operate au- tonomously. The measurement technique based on voltammetry remains the same and provides indexes based on the level of oxi- dizable polyphenols and total polyphenols of the juice or wine analyzed. The analyzer also fea- tures the latest generation of electrodes and includes new ref- erence values for specific wine- making applications and grape varieties. Results are downloaded to a web interface via Wi-Fi. winequalitysolutions.com Manage and monitor weather data Davis Instruments released the EnviroMonitor system to help growers measure, monitor and manage vital weather data. The expandable platform works with the most widely used farm sen- sors. The system is controlled through a smart device app that also provides customized text and email alerts as well as the means to download or share data. davisnet.com Yeast for low-alcohol, full-flavor wines Erblsöh introduced Oenoferm LA-HOG, which is a GMO-free yeast developed for red or white wines that are made with high sugar content. The yeast creates up to 1% less alcohol and more glycerin compared to other yeast strains. The supplier reports added glycerin rather than alco- hol provides more body and soft- ness while suppressing astringent flavors and boosting aromas. erbsloeh.com Shrinksleever for neck branding PDC International Corp. intro- duced its monoblock shrinkseal- er, which is the latest addition to the company's 75 series of shrinksealers. The machine fea- tures a neck band applicator, conveyor, inspection system, line sensors and shrink tunnel in one integrated unit. The shrinksealer can accommodate nearly any product shape and is compatible with all major sleeving films. pdc-corp.com Water-treated barrel for soft touch The Boswell Co. unveiled Eclat "Hydro" barrels from Jean-Chris- tophe Varron and Tonnellerie VINEA in Cognac. According to the supplier, the barrels are pro- duced with French oak staves that are steamed using magne- tized water in a pressurized, high- temperature tank for 30 minutes. After the "Hydro" treatment, the staves are bent without fire and toasted via proprietary ceramic radiant-heat technology. The fine- grain barrels are toasted and pro- duced without ever coming in contact with flames. The Boswell Co. reports the barrels provide "an exceptionally smooth, fluid, elegant contribution to the wine, and the profile exceeds the fruit preservation of other French oak barrels in the low-toast spec- trum." boswellcompany.com Enzymatic analyzer for wine Astoria-Pacific is now offering the rAPID-T analyzer with a new en- zymatic testing system for wine analysis. The supplier reports the machine can run multiple analy- ses without requiring a setup change; reagent consumption is lower than other models and re- quires less maintenance because it does not use pump tubes, transmission tubing or dialysis membranes. The machine can be used for acetic acid, ammonia, glucose and fructose, malic acid, NOPA, sulfides and other tests. astoria-pacific.com Printer invests in new digital press Columbia Label announced it had acquired a new HP Indigo WS6800 digital press to "enhance its cus- tom and specialty wine label and packaging production." The suppli- er claims it now has the latest model of such printers on the West Coast. Columbia Label is also add- ing an ABG Digicon machine that will complement the new press by offering more finishing options such as embossing, hot stamping, specialty coatings and special em- bellishments. columbialabel.com Custom holography service API unveiled a custom decora- tive holography service called Holonique Boutique. The cus- tom-design service can integrate the supplier's holographic foil and film into a packaging pro- gram to add an extra dimension. apigroup.com 'Space-saving' packaging material Storopack released the Airplus Wrap film that it describes as a "space-saving substitute for tra- ditional air bubble film" and ideal for protecting fragile items during shipping. The material's "flexible, wavelike structure" also helps pack items more tightly and is available in two formats: 400 mm x 175 mm (19d wrap) and 710 mm x 175 mm (36d wrap). storopack.com Product News Latest offerings and announcements Tartaric stability with cation exchange resin Della Toffola unveiled the DTX ma- chine that employs cation exchange resins to provide tartaric stability in wine and juice. According to the supplier, the resins are copolymers of styrene and divinylbenzene con- taining sulfuric acid. The system in- volves pumping 10% to 30% of a wine through a column of cured resin that acts as a polyelectrolyte insoluble to provide tartaric stability in relation to potassium tartrate and other calcium salts. The DTX is a fully automated machine that features a centrifugal pump, flow me- ters, pressure sensors, pH meters and a touchscreen control panel. The DTX can be used for tartaric stability as well as to lower pH, in- crease color in red wines, lower the concentration of iron and metals, increase total acidity and lower the pH of clarified juice and must. The machine has a treatment capacity range of 20 hL to 100 hL per hour, or about 500 gallons to 2,600 gallons per hour. dellatoffola.us
