He never succeeded, however—mostly because of diseases and pests, especially phylloxera. Knowing t h i s , h e w o u l d p r o b a b l y b e pleased that the Eastern Section of the American Society for Enol- ogy and Viticulture will hold its annual meeting July 10-12 at the Omni Hotel Charlottesville. According to Eastern Section administrator Dr. Renee Threl- fall, research specialist for the Institute of Food Science and Engineering at the University of Arkansas, the conference will be preceded by visits to three local wineries July 10. During the tour, attendees will hear from vineyard owners, w i n e m a k e r s a n d m a n a g e r s about on-site experimentation with fruit drying, canopy man- agement, vineyard mechaniza- tion, novel variety and clone evaluations as well as innova- tive winemaking practices. The pre-conference tour will visit Barboursville Vineyards, northeast of Charlottesville, which was established in 1976 by the Zonin family, owners of Cantine Zonin S.p.A., a wine company in Gambellara, Italy; Trump Winery, purchased by Donald Trump at auction in April 2011 and now run by his son, Eric Trump; King Family Vineyards, founded by Ellen and David King in 1998 and located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Crozet, Va. The ASEV-ES conference to be held July 11 and 12 will in- clude presentations by research- ers from across the country on a variety of technical enological and viticultural subjects. Topics will range from evaluation of rootstocks in Texas to discussion of the impacts of frozen mate- rial other than grapes (MOG) in Ontario. In addition, 11 students from six universities will give oral presentations about their research as part of the Student Oral Presentation Competition. Dr. Tony Wolf, professor of viticulture at Virginia Tech and recipient of this year's ASEV-ES O u t s t a n d i n g A c h i e v e m e n t Award, will be the featured speaker July 11. His topic will be "The Shaping of a Viticul- tural Career." The 2017 ASEV-ES Distin- guished Service Award will be presented to Dr. Murli Dhar- madhikari, retired extension enologist from Iowa State Uni- versity and the Midwest Grape and Wine Industry Institute. An industry workshop, "Pio- neering Wine Grape Varieties Adapted to the Challenges of the East," will constitute the July 12 afternoon program. The workshop will feature presenta- tions about new wine grape cul- t i v a r s I t a s c a i n M i n n e s o t a , Opportunity and Enchantment in Arkansas and vinifera-hybrid selections resistant to Pierce's disease and powdery mildew in California.
