MANA GEMENT Creating a knowledge repository emarkably, even though grapes have been grown and wine made for thousands of years, there is still much to learn. This is particularly true in the Southwest, where the industry is very young. The center will build and make available a knowledge base that will advance best viticulture and enology practices throughout the desert Southwest. This base achieves its foundation in part from local visionaries Eric Glomski, owner of R Page Springs Cellars, and Maynard James Keenan, owner of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards. Keenan and Glomski also are partners in Arizona Stronghold Vineyards. Greg Gillespie, vice president of academic and student affairs at Yavapai College, adds his expertise gained from two similar community college programs that he helped establish and expand in Washington state. J.C. in the industry to mimic the experiences of wineries with similar production sizes. Economic development Robust and sustainable industries require collaboration that supports economic de- velopment. Tom Schumacher, former dean at Yavapai College, oenophile and avid supporter of local wineries, began creating links between the wine industry and the college some time ago to foster entrepre- neurship, transfer knowledge and better understand the training necessary to meet the needs of winery and vineyard owners. The Southwest Wine Center will play a key role in its success. The rest of the story Now back to Tool: Winemaker May- nard James Keenan, a winery and vine- yard owner, is also a brilliant alterna- tive rock singer, songwriter, musician and producer behind the bands Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. There's more: Keenan and Glomski are featured in "Blood Into Wine," a documentary that tells the story of the pair starting their wineries and the successes they have had in the Verde Valley—exactly where Yavapai College is located. And the best part: They are both involved in this project. While on tour during our May design charette on campus, Keenan called in regularly with his thoughts about the project and to answer ques- tions we had about winemaking in the Verde Valley. See, I told you we had good stories. Joe Chauncey, LEED BD+C, Architect, is a principal of Seattle-based Boxwood, an integrated design studio.
