Carter named to hall of fame Washington State University research winemaker George Carter, who worked side by side with "father of Washington wine" Dr. Walter Clore, is the 2012 in- ductee into the Legends of Washington Wine Hall of Fame. Carter, who died in 2007 at age 94, made wine from more than 100 grape varieties that were planted by Clore throughout the state and at the research block at WSU Irri- gated Agriculture Research and Exten- sion Center in Prosser, Wash. Naylor Wine Cellars opens new location Naylor Wine Cellars opened a new wine tasting room and shop in the Queensgate Shopping Center in Stewartstown, Pa. River City takes top honors at Indy show River City Winery in New Albany, Ind., beat 2,400 other wines to earn the Wine of the Year award in the Indy International Wine Competition held Aug. 1-3 at Pur- due University. Judges awarded River City Winery's 2011 Vignoles the Wine of the Year honor, making it the first Indiana wine to receive the accolade in the contest's 39 years. Tokyo Nagoya Osaka Hiroshima Japan New owners for Blue Grouse Vineyards Paul and Cristina Brunner, with their daughter Paula, purchased Blue Grouse Vineyards in the Cowichan Valley region on Vancouver Island. In a statement an- nouncing the purchase, the Brunners said they are considering renovating the tasting room, adding a boutique inn as well as a "farm-to-table" restaurant. B.C. winery loses $200,000 in theft A boutique winery lost $200,000 in inven- tory when thieves stole more than 5,200 bottles during a late-night heist. Carlos Lee, owner of Blackwood Lane Winery, said the thieves cut the lock and chain on the win- ery's gate and then broke into a warehouse to steal several hundred cases of the win- ery's premium Bordeaux-style blend, Alli- ance, which sells for $60 per bottle. 20 WINES & VINES SEPTEMBER 2012 Reynolds to direct Texas winegrape group Debbie Reynolds is the executive direc- tor of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association. Wisconsin Ledge AVA approved The federal Alcohol and Tobacco Trade Bureau approved the nation's 12th larg- est and 203rd unique AVA. The Wiscon- sin Ledge Viticultural Area is the state's second AVA and was the vision of Steve De Baker, owner of Trout Springs Win- ery in Greenleaf, Wis. De Baker said in a statement that he "can only envision that 20 years from now, the number of people taking advantage of this oppor- tunity will have quadrupled, and we can look back at this time with a degree of pride and accomplishment." EAST New winemaker at Stonechurch Vineyards Thomas Laszlo is the new head winemaker at Stonechurch Vine- yards in Niagara- on-the-Lake, Ontar- io, Canada. Laszlo previously worked as a consulting wine- maker and spent eight years as winemaker Jeweler purchases R.I. winery Alex and Ani, the maker of "positive ener- gy" jewelry, has purchased Sakonnet Vine- yards in Little Compton, R.I.
