Key Indicators Complete data is available at winesandvines.com/metrics D omestic wine sales through all channels totaled $2.6 billion in January 2017, according to market-research firm bw166, up 4% from a year earlier. Sales for the 12 months ended January 2017 also increased 4%, totaling $39 billion. January is traditionally the low point of the year for wine sales, but the strong start to 2017 bodes well for the months ahead. Growth simi- lar to January would put sales for February, another traditionally slow month, ahead of the slowest months of 2016. Sparkling wine sales increased 9% in Janu- ary from a year earlier, but the 12-month tallies showed table wines driving the increase with a gain of $1.6 billion in sales. Total wine sales, including packaged im- ports, stood at $59 billion in the 12 months ending in January, also an increase of 4%. Pack- aged imports continued to lag domestic wine sales, however, rising 3% off a much lower base. Consistent with this, Steve Fredricks of Turren- tine Brokerage recently noted that favorable exchange rates don't necessarily give imported wines an edge in the marketplace. Competition isn't always a matter of price, especially as con- sumers explore more expensive offerings. —Peter Mitham U.S. Wine Sales Winery Job Index MONTH January 2017 280 January 2016 247 12 MONTHS January 2017 291 January 2016 269 MONTHLY INDEX 8% U.S. Sales Growth Continues at 4% Source: winejobs.com Winejobs.com Index 500 400 300 200 100 0 2017 2016 Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan 13% METRICS 10 WINES&VINES March 2017 Off-Premise Sales IRI Channels MONTH January 2017 $690M January 2016 $673M 12 MONTHS January 2017 $8,678M January 2016 $8,311M MONTHLY SALES U.S. Wine Sales MONTH January 2017 $2,564M January 2016 $2,462M 12 MONTHS January 2017 $39,171M January 2016 $37,570M MONTHLY SALES 2% 4% 4% 4% Direct-to-Consumer Shipments MONTH January 2017 $100M January 2016 $86M 12 MONTHS January 2017 $2,345M January 2016 $1,978M MONTHLY SHIPMENTS 19% 16% Source: , Wines Vines Analytics.
