the cost of standard wine bottles,
according to Tipton.
The "fleur" bottles have a
bloom-like flare at the top and
are closed with a standard cork
without a capsule. "I am my mo-
bile bottler's worst nightmare,"
Tipton said.
"These bottles are shaped like
bowling pins, so we've had to in-
vest in special tooling for the bot-
tling line. They are also slower to
run on the bottling line. The shape
of the bottle dictates a small label,
so that limits the information that
can be printed on the label. The
bottles weigh more than standard
bottles and require larger card-
board boxes."
Available online and at the
tasting room, the Belle Blanc
blend of Grenache Blanc, Rous-
sanne and Viognier retails for $26
per bottle; the winery's 2015 Viog-
nier is $24.
"It takes money and a will to
invest in intangibles if you want
to find that perfect positioning,"
commented Erica Harrop, presi-
dent of Global Package. Those
who are resistant to investing in
R&D or are too conservative are
more likely to take a "me, too"
position, she said.
Her advice: Identify your
competitive brands, know the
price point of your wine, and let
professionals offer best solu-
tions. The owner's job is to know
how much (s)he can afford to
take the advice of expert design-
ers and marketers.
It's not an easy solution, Har-
rop conceded. "Great packaging
is not pushed forward by the ac-
countants. But profitability is
definitely better when a brand
reaches higher."

vinified in the style of a cream
sherry by St. Clair Winery in

the inaugural vintage (2015)
