Key Indicators Complete data is available at winesandvines.com/metrics U .S. wine sales grew 6% in December 2016 compared to December 2015, ac- cording to market-research firm bw166. Sales through all channels hit $3.9 billion for the month, pushing total sales for the year to $39.8 billion, a 5% increase over 2015. Total wine sales including packaged imports approached $60 billion. Packaged imports lagged domestic wine sales, however, growing just 4% off a much lower base. Bulk imports grew to $2 billion in sales for the year. Domestic sparkling wine growth remained strong at 11%, totaling $1.8 billion for the year. Domestic still wines remained in the driver's seat, however. Despite just 5% growth, the large volume of still wines sold meant the growth represented nearly $1.7 billion worth of additional sales—almost as much as the entire sparkling wine category. A key challenge facing off-premise wines, bw166 reports, is achieving price increases. Sales continue to grow steadily, but the average per-bottle value of those sales is just under $10—a 1% increase from last year, less than the gains beer and spirits posted. —Peter Mitham U.S. Wine Sales Winery Job Index MONTH December 2016 150 December 2015 141 12 MONTHS December 2016 288 December 2015 270 MONTHLY INDEX 7% U.S. Wines Keep Growing; Sales Up 6% Source: winejobs.com winejobs.com Index 500 400 300 200 100 0 2016 2015 Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec 6% METRICS 10 WINES&VINES February 2017 Off-Premise Sales IRI Channels MONTH December 2016 $845M December 2015 $820M 12 MONTHS December 2016 $8,660M December 2015 $8,250M MONTHLY SALES U.S. Wine Sales MONTH December 2016 $3,908M December 2015 $3,688M 12 MONTHS December 2016 $39,760M December 2015 $37,894M MONTHLY SALES 3% 5% 5% 6% Direct-to-Consumer Shipments MONTH December 2016 $187M December 2015 $177M 12 MONTHS December 2016 $2,330M December 2015 $1,967M MONTHLY SHIPMENTS 18% 5% Source: , Wines Vines Analytics.
