February 2017 WINES&VINES 71 PRACTICAL WINERY & VINEYARD GRAPEGROWING An important and necessary modification to the EL scale reported by B. Coombe was required to assess shoot-to-shoot variability at véraison. 2 The modification entailed equilibrating the number of EL stages at véraison as a function of percent berry color to the number of EL stages during bloom as a function of percentage of cap fall. The updated EL stage values for véraison used in this trial are shown in the table "Updated Eichhorn-Lorenz (EL) Stages for Assessing Asynchronicity during Véraison." Without these updates, the shoot-to- shoot variability in phenological stage ob- served as percent cap fall at bloom could not be evaluated during véraison. There is evidence that asynchronous cap fall during bloom is related to the asynchronous onset of berry softening and coloring during vé- raison, 8 which provides the physiological basis for updated stages. Since the Eichhorn-Lorenz scale is an ordinal scale and not a continuous scale, the measure of central tendency reported here was the median. Variability was assessed using an interquartile range expressed as box and whisker plots. Treatment differences were evaluated with an ordinal logistic model using JMP statistical software. The ordinal logistic model was used since the UPDATED EICHHORN-LORENZ (EL) STAGES FOR ASSESSING ASYNCHRONICITY DURING VÉRAISON Current EL Stage (Coombe, 1995) Updated EL Stage Description Flowering begins 19 19 Beginning of flowering; about 16 leaves separated 10% 20 20 10% caps off 30% 21 21 30% caps off 50% 23 23 50% caps off; 17-20 leaves separated (flowering or bloom) 80% 25 25 80% caps off Complete 26 26 Cap fall complete Véraison begins 34 34 Beginning of véraison; berries softening 10% 35 10% berries colored 30% 36 30% berries colored 50% 35 38 50% berries colored (véraison) 80% 40 80% berries colored Complete 41 Véraison complete Ripening 36 42 Berries with intermediate sugar values 37 43 Berries not quite ripe 38 44 Berries harvest ripe 39 45 Berries over ripe The Eichhorn-Lorenz (EL) scale was updated to equilibrate the number of EL stages at véraison as a function of percent berry color. www.scottlab.com • info@scottlab.com High-tech meets handcrafted.
