60 WINES&VINES February 2017 WINERY & VINEYARD EQUIPMENT During the award ceremony, Weber referred to the basic con- cept and reasoning behind the competition. "The German Wine- growers' Association, as orga- nizer of Intervitis Interfructa Hortitechnica, in collaboration with the German Agricultural Society, is recognizing the su- perb achievements of exhibitors who are contributing to the progress of our industry," he said. "Technical innovations allow us to continuously im- prove the quality of the products and acquire customers in a com- petitive global environment." The jury recognized 26 of the entries received as innovations; this represented over half of all submissions. "This result demon- strates that the supplier industry is working closely with the indus- try and constantly striving to op- timize the already high technical standards," Weber added. Dr. Rudolf Nickenig, the Ger- man Winegrowers' executive sec- retary, added, "The exchange of experiences and information among scientists, advisors, repre- sentatives of the supplier industry and practitioners makes a signifi- cant contribution towards trigger- i n g f u r t h e r i n n o v a t i v e a n d technical development." He also defined the competi- tion in the overall concept of the Stuttgart-based event: "Intervitis Interfructa Hortitechnica offers visitors an excellent market over- view of the innovations in the industry. The Innovation Award is a key element of the event. To- gether with the combination of international press and the inter- national winegrowing congress, the machine demonstrations, the special show Drones and Robots, the tasting workshop and discus- sions in the wine meetup, it is an unrivalled industry platform. The entire German winegrowing in- dustry can be proud." In order to seek completely independent results, neither the German Winegrowers Associa- tion, the German Agricultural So- ciety, host venue Landesmesse Stuttgart nor any suppliers were represented on the jury for the Innovation Awards. Intervitis Interfructa Hortitech- nica is the international technol- ogy trade fair for wine, juice and special crops. The main focus of the event is on cultivation and harvesting technology, processing and process control, filling and packaging technology, and orga- nization and marketing. The trade fair takes place every two years at Messe Stuttgart. The technical supporter for wine was the German Winegrow- ers' Association, based in Bonn. The technical supporter for special crops was the DLG German Agri- cultural Society, based in Frankfurt am Main. In addition, numerous other institutes and associations supported various themes and sec- tions of the trade fair such as fruit, juice and spirits.
