February 2017 WINES&VINES 59 WINERY & VINEYARD EQUIPMENT TMCI Padovan was honored in the category Processing and Process Control. Five other innovations received silver medals. "Significant technical advances can also lie in the detail of a machine, as well as in the complete new development," Weber explained. For instance, the reduced workload achieved by an innovative, hydraulic adjusting unit for a disc harrow from the company Herzau + Schmitt from Fulda, Germany, appeared so beneficial that the jury awarded it a silver medal in the category Cultivation and Harvest- ing Technology. Since the disc harrow axles can be replaced with rotary harrow elements, the machine can also be used in the cultivation of crops such as fruit and asparagus. The objective of innovative methods in microbiology is to optimize the quality of the wine. The enzyme product Trenolin Bouquet- Plus from Erbslöh in Geisenheim, Germany, which improves varietal aromas especially in sweet wines, was awarded a silver medal by the jury in the category Processing and Process Control. In the realm of packaging that helps to maintain wine quality, closures that limit or eliminate cork taint remain an issue of con- cern for many wineries. Two Portugal-based companies, Amorim Cork and M. A. Silva Corticas, developed preventative testing pro- cedures in order to guarantee corks with TCA taint levels below the sensory threshold. Both companies received silver medals for their products in the category Filling and Packaging Technology. The jury gave another silver medal in the category of Organization and Marketing for a new information platform for winegrowing companies with construction plans by the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture in Veitshöchheim, Germany. BayWeinTEK is the contact point for anyone looking for a simple introduction to the topic of renovation and expansion of their wine estates. Three special prizes The jury honored the efforts of suppliers with innovative, forward-looking ways to counter the problems of climate change in the enologi- cal sector with three special prizes. If the sugar breakdown by wine yeast leads to products other than alcohol, a lower alco- hol content can be attained despite the higher must sugar. Following the application of clas- sic selection methods, the two companies Erbslöh and Lallemand from Vienna, Austria, are launching corresponding yeast strains on the market. Lallemand received another special prize for a product used for the control of lactic acid and acetic acid bacteria that lowers the risk of failures and aroma problems during the fermentation phase.
