King Estate Winery

King Estate Winery is located
near Eugene, Ore., in the south-
ern half of the Willamette Valley.
The winery is one of the largest
in Oregon, producing 400,000
cases per year, and most of that
production is Pinot Noir. The win-
ery also produces wine from Bor-
deaux and Rhône grape varieties
grown in eastern Washington and
southern Oregon.
Winemaker Spencer Spetnagel
buys barrels from 14 coopers for
just the Pinot Noir program and
typically works with more than 30
cooperages for any vintage. Every
year he conducts trials on new
types of barrels and new coopers
as well as to make sure some of
his regular barrels are staying con-
sistent. "That's one of the main
things we're looking for is consis-
tency in barrels," he said. "We
want to know exactly how the
wine will respond to a barrel."
In all, the winery usually owns
up to 3,600 barrels. The majority
of the vessels are Burgundian-
shaped for the Pinot Noir or white
wine fermentations. Each year,
