February 2017 WINES&VINES 23 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Fresno State professor emeritus dies Dr. Vincent Petrucci, professor emeritus of vi- ticulture at California State University, Fresno, died Dec. 27 at the age of 91. Petrucci taught at Fresno State from 1948 until 1993 and helped establish the school's viticulture and enology program. In 1985 Petrucci founded the Fresno State Viticulture and Enology Re- search Center, which includes the Vincent E. Petrucci Library, and served as its director until his retirement in 1993. To honor Petruc- ci's career and work, the Fresno State Winery released Petrucci's Crush, a special blend designed by Petrucci and Fresno State wine- maker Matt Brain, on Dec. 1. McAllister promoted at La Crema Craig Mc Allister was promoted to the position of head winemaker at La Crema winery in Sonoma County. McAllister first joined the winery in 2007 as harvest enologist, and his most recent posi- tion was associate winemaker. As the new winemaker for La Crema, he will be fo- cused on building the brand's portfolio of wines from coastal regions with a focus on wines from Monterey County and a rosé of Pinot Noir that will be expanded into a national program. La Crema is part of Jackson Family Wines. Wine writer donates archive to UC Davis British wine writer Jancis Robinson is donating her personal archive of tasting notes, published work, correspondence, photographs and other works to the library of the University of California, Davis. Robinson is the wine correspondent for the Financial Times newspaper, author of numerous books and the founder of jancisrobinson.com. Her work joins the papers of Hugh Johnson, another notable British critic, at the UC Davis Library. New GM at Anderson's Conn Valley James Silver is the new general manager for An- derson's Conn Valley Vineyards in the Napa Val- ley. Silver has worked for nearly three decades in the wine industry, and most recently he was general manager of Martinelli Winery in Windsor. New national sales manager at Michael David Tom Schmitz was promoted to national sales manager at Michael David Winery in Lodi. Schmitz has been with the winery for nearly a decade and most recently held the title of Mid- west divisional manager. Schmitz is based in the Chicago, Ill., area. SSU launches Rodney Strong Pathways program Rodney Strong Vineyards and the Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University announced the launch of the Rodney Strong Pathways Pro- gram with a gift of $250,000 from the winery. The program is intended "to bring a broad range of talented students" to the university and will com- plement the school's Educational Opportunity Program by engaging new students during each year of their time on campus with "co-curricular training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, ca- reer guidance and leadership."
