Faces & Forums 82 WINES&VINES December 2016 New Mission Winemakers A coalition of urban winemakers held their inaugural tasting for trade and media personnel Nov. 7 in San Fran- cisco. Members of the New Mission Winemakers range from veterans of large California wine companies to founders of new wine labels. They source fruit from a variety of locations, and one even planted a vineyard within the city limits. Elly Hartshorn of Neighborhood Vineyards planted vines three years ago in San Francisco. Scott Shapley of Flywheel Wines makes wine from grapes grown in Monterey County. Bryan Harrington and Ken Zinns share selections from Harrington Wines, which specializes in old-vine Pinot Noir. Harrington sources fruit from Paso Robles in the south to Mendocino County in the north. Eric Fountain helps winemaker Kristie Tacey pour wines from her Tessier Winery. John Fones produces more than 1,000 cases per year at Cellars 33 Winery. Winemaker Tim Telli of Betwixt Wines pours his small-lot Grenache and Chardonnay. Ed Kurtzman makes wine for the August West and Sandler Wine Co. labels.
