March's Contributors D Andrew Reynolds r. Andrew G. Reynolds reviews recent research about terroir this month in his article for the Wine East section, which appears on page 46. Reynolds is a profes- sor of biological sciences and viticulture at Brock University's Cool Climate Oenology & Viticulture Institute in St. Catharines, Ontario. Several of the studies were conducted in his own Niagara region, and he was an author or co-author of three of them. Jeff Carroll his is the second Viewpoint article in Wines & Vines by Carroll, who is vice presi- dent of compliance and director of product management at ShipCompliant, based in Boulder, Colo. His news analysis piece (page 66) explains how valuable to all direct-to- consumer entities is the research that the T Maryland comptroller did to help state legislators consider legal- izing direct wine shipments this year. Jane Firstenfeld s the public relations battle continues over which wine packaging type is the greenest, contributing editor Jane Firstenfeld's article, "Looking Again at Glass" (page 40), reminds us that 750ml glass bottles still dominate the field. Further, glass wine bottle manufacturers have developed lighter weight models that A require less energy to produce and less fuel to transport—a win for the environment and wineries building a green image. Tim Patterson he author of the Inquiring Winemaker column, Tim Patterson asks a big question in this issue (page 56) as he examines new research about consumers' tastes in wine: "How the heck did the Tolerants—the fans of killer Cabernet—become the masters of the wine universe?" This is essential reading T for winemakers and marketers who haven't fully grasped the old axiom that "people talk dry but drink sweet." A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
