WineEast Mc Carthy's book makes for interesting reading and is for the most part accurate. It does, however, have a most memorable misprint on page 75: "It was previously said that vinifera could only grow at an elevation of 600 miles above sea level." "Maryland Wine: A Full-Bodied History" by Regina McCarthy is published by The History Press and available online for $19.99. Connecticut's backyard eric d. lehman and amy nawrocki, both english and creative writing instructors at the university of Bridgeport, wrote "a history of Connecti- cut Wine: Vineyard in Your Backyard." lehman has written extensively about Connecticut life, and nawrocki is an award- winning poet. Their background has guar- anteed an engaging and well-written book chronicling their interviews with viticulturists and winemakers as well as their own experi- ences traveling across the state. The authors are not historians, however, and the early history of Connecticut wines up through 1984 is compressed into seven pages in the first chapter. Their background knowledge of eastern wines is not extensive, and from a historical standpoint, this volume is the weakest in the series. On the plus side, the authors are skillful interviewers who know how to tell a good story. Consequently, as a portrait of the state's wine industry and the people who are making it happen, their book is an informative and delightful read. "A History of Connecticut Wine: Vineyard in Your Backyard" by Eric D. Lehman and Amy Nawrocki is published by The History Press and available online for $19.99. New book about Virginia "Beyond Jefferson's Vines: The evolu- tion of Quality Wine in Virginia" by richard G. leahy "tells the story of what has hap- pened to Thomas Jefferson's vines in his native Virginia, focusing on the past 30 years but also shedding light on previously unexamined chapters of the 18th century Virginia wine experiment." first and foremost, the 226-page book published in May by Sterling publica- tion Co. lives up to its title. If the third president of the united States were to return to earth today, there would be no faster way for him to catch up on what has happened to wine in Virginia since he left Monticello. Wine in Print leahy discusses some of the types of wines being produced in Virginia and gives an insight into viticulture in the state including the climate, challenges and growers' responses. a description of the wine regions of Virginia and many of the wineries in those regions follows, along with explanation of state government is- sues, women in Virginia winemaking and other subjects. While this book might provide a quick update for Jefferson if he came back to life today—and a broad overview of the evolution of the industry it is—readers who are more knowledgeable about Virginia and its history will realize that the book has some important gaps, particularly with regard to people who played a vital role in the way the modern industry developed. for example, there is no mention of archie Smith Jr. or archie Smith III at Meredyth Vineyards, nor their part in the passage of the Virginia farm Winery law. The author explained that it was impos- sible to include everyone in the book, and leahy has chosen to present a coherent narrative in his own way. There is no doubt that he has given readers an over- view of what has happened to Jefferson's vines in Virginia. "Beyond Jefferson's Vines: The Evolution of Quality Wine in Virginia" by Richard G. Leahy is published by Sterling Publication Co. and available online for $19.95.
