NORTHWEST Duck Pond names new winemaker Fries Family Wines hired Trevor Chlanda to be the new winemaker for Duck Pond Cellars in Dundee, Ore. Before joining Duck Pond, Chlanda was the assistant director of wine- making at the custom- crush facility Bin to Bottle in Napa, Calif., and before that he worked at several other wineries in North- ern California and New Zealand. Upchurch opens new winery and tasting room Chris and Thea Upchurch celebrated the grand opening of their new Up- church Vineyard winery and tasting room in the Red Mountain AVA on June 1. Upchurch is a vet- eran winemaker in Wash- ington state and is one of the four founding partners of DeLille Cellars. The estate vineyard is located in the southern part of Red Mountain and man- aged by Dick Boushey. Upchurch has produced wines under his own label since 2007. CENTRAL Arizona winery to expand The owners of Carlson Creek Vineyard in Wil- cox, Ariz., purchased a 14,000-square-foot build- ing to house a new tasting room, fermentation cellar and space for aging and storing wine. The winery is also opening a new tasting room in Scottsdale, Ariz., this summer. The new build- ing in Wilcox, near the win- ery's 160-acre vineyard, is a former Chevrolet dealership that was built in the 1940s. Colorado school to offer wine, viticulture program Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo., will begin offering a two- year degree in viticulture and enology starting this fall. Offered through West- ern Colorado Community College, the new program is designed to support the growing wine industry in Colorado's Western Slope. Students in the new pro- gram will grow grapes at a Colorado State University research site and make wine at local wineries. EAST SBA honors winery The U.S. Small Business Administration honored Adirondack Winery in Lake George, N.Y., with an award for excellence from during an event in May. The winery, which is owned by Michael and Sasha Pardy, opened in 2008 and has since moved in to a larger production facility in Queensbury, N.Y. Adirondack Winery pro- duces more than 10,000 cases per year and sells wine to customers in 22 states and at more than 350 retail locations in New York state.
