22 WINES&VINES June 2016 WINE INDUSTRY NEWS CALIFORNIA Mayo joins San Antonio Winery winemaking team Ben Mayo joined the wine- making team of San Antonio Winery in Paso Robles. Mayo has more than 15 years of winemaking experi- ence in the Paso Robles area and will be focused on the San Simeon, Maddalena and Opaque brands as well as helping to oversee the construction of a new winery. Prior to joining San Antonio Winery, which is owned by Riboli Family Wine Estates, Mayo was the winemaker and general manager at Rotta Winery and spent more than a decade as winemaker and partner at Eberle Winery. Joseph Phelps winery promotes next generation Elizabeth Neuman is the new director of business development and Will Phelps is the new direc- tor of marketing at Joseph Phelps Vineyards in the Napa Valley. The two pro- motions are part of a long- term succession plan to ensure the winery remains family owned. Phelps and Neuman are grandchildren of winery founder Joe Phelps. Neuman joined the family business in 2011 after working as a wine consultant for Southern Wine & Spirits, and Phelps worked in sales for Trinitas Cellars before joining Jo- seph Phelps in 2012. Winery adds guest lodging Claiborne & Churchill win- ery in the Edna Valley near San Luis Obispo recently completed a renovation of its tasting room and added guest lodgings. The winery is owned and operated by the original owners, Claiborne Thompson and Fredericka Churchill Thompson, and has been producing Alsatian- style white wines since 1983. In addition to renovating and expanding the tasting room, the owners added a two- bedroom duplex cottage next door to the winery. Yao Family opens tasting room Yao Family Wines, founded by former professional basketball player Yao Ming, opened a new tasting room in downtown St. Helena to feature his Yao Ming and Napa Crest wines. The space features a marble- topped oval bar and lounge spaces to accommodate groups and private, guided tastings. The tasting room is located at 929 Main St., which formerly had been the tasting room of Bello Family Vineyards. Will Jarvis promoted at family winery Will Jarvis was promoted from vice president to president of Jarvis Estate Winery in Napa. Jarvis will oversee all business operations of the winery founded by his parents, William and Leticia Jar- vis. Prior to rejoining the family winery, Will Jarvis worked at two pre-IPO biotech companies that have since gone public. After completing his MBA, Will Jarvis interned at Sequoia Capital, where he conducted investment diligence and later be- came one of the founding members of a life sciences business advisory and in- vestment banking firm.
