August's Contributors W Jane Firstenfeld ines & Vines contributing editor Jane Firstenfeld covers wine packaging several times per year. Her cover story (page 24) for this issue describes the state of the screwcap in North American wineries. After speaking with more than a dozen wine- makers, suppliers and other observers, she concludes that the state of screwcaps is one of continued growth and improved acceptance as an alterna- tive to natural cork, primarily for wine quality issues. Jamie Goode B logger and author Jamie Goode is one of the world's best science-oriented wine writers. He is the wine columnist with the UK national newspaper, The Sunday Express, founder of WineAnorak.com and author of The Science of Wine. His new book, Authentic Wine, co-written with Sam Harrop, is scheduled for release in Septem- ber. In this issue (page 32) Goode takes apart technical corks so that Wines & Vines readers can understand how they work. Mark Chien A regular contributor to the Wine East section of Wines & Vines, Mark Chien is the statewide viticulture extension educator for the Penn State Cooperative Extension based in Lancaster, Penn. His job is to help Pennsylvania winegrape growers with the (as he calls it) "heartbreaking" job of grow- ing high-quality grapes in an extremely chal- lenging climate. In this issue (page 50) he contributes the first article in a two-part series about short-season viticulture. Glenn McGourty M cGourty is the University of Califor- nia winegrowing advisor for Northern California's Mendocino and Lake coun- ties. In this issue (page 62) he goes into detail about regulated deficit irrigation (RDI), a smart way for growers to con- serve water and encourage development of the highest quality winegrapes at the same time. He walks readers through steps to evaluate their water needs and helps them understand how to adopt effective RDI programs. August's Cover Spinning top: Photographer Dan Mills catch- es an instant in time. This semi-automatic sealing machine by MALA Closure Systems affixes a screwtop to a bottle of Fantasia, Castello Di Amorosa's sparkling rosé. Read about the changing status of screwcaps as closures on page 24. To see more of Dan Mills' work, go to danmills.com. 4 Wines & Vines AUGUsT 201 1 A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
