Vineyards average between 15% and 30% difference in yields from year to year. With such variability and uncertainty, it is difficult some years to forecast wine inventories and cash flow for the entire supply chain from grower to retailer. Understanding how these yield variations occur is an important part of farming winegrapes. The process of setting a vineyard crop starts almost a year be- fore the vines flower and set a crop for the current season. As the vines flower, the beginning of the next crop is starting in the cells of the stems. Of course, crop load is determined in part by how many buds are left behind at pruning time.
