March 2016 WINES&VINES 57 Landis from Pennsylvania's De- partment of Environmental Pro- tection will review wastewater regulations in Pennsylvania, and Kathy Kelley, professor of horticul- tural marketing and business management at Pennsylvania State University, will lead a ses- sion about increasing tasting room visits through social media. Conference sessions on March 9 and 10 will focus on three areas: enology, viticulture and business (money, management and market- ing). Fruit wines will be the sub- ject of two enology sessions. Dr. Joe Fiola, professor of viticulture and small fruit at the University of Maryland, will discuss the chemistry, processing and fermen- tation of various fruits, and in a second session, three winemak- ers—Phil Plummer of Montezuma Winery in New York, Mike Wil- liams of the Winery at Wilcox in Pennsylvania, and Ken Hardcastle of Hermit Woods Winery in New Hampshire—will participate in a roundtable discussion of their fruit winemaking techniques. The fruit wine sessions will have sev- eral wines available for tasting. Chardonnay will be the focus of two winemaker roundtable dis- cussions. The first will focus on "the elegant, fresh style," and the second on "the rich, full-bodied style." Both will offer wine sam- ples to illustrate the different styles being presented. A session about barrel and oak alternatives for red and white wines will in- clude tastings as well. Two combination sessions will include both viticultural and wine- making information. "Worthwhile Cold-Hardy Red Hybrids: St. Croix and Landot Noir" will feature talks by three winemakers growing and making wine from those grape varieties, while Dr. Wayne Wilcox (professor of plant pathology at Cornell University) and two Vir- ginia winemakers will look at "Late-Season Rot Management, Pre-Harvest and Pre-Crush." Other viticulture sessions will look at a variety of topics such as Chardonel as a cost-effective al- ternative to Chardonnay, fungal disease prevention and recovering from (and avoiding) winter dam- age. A range of marketing and management subjects will be cov- ered in the business sessions, in- cluding social media options for wine marketing, trends in online marketing and a "branding work- shop" for better wine label design to help sell more wine. EWE's trade show will feature more than 180 exhibiting compa- nies. People in all aspects of the industry will have the opportu- nity to meet face to face with many different suppliers and to evaluate the most current prod- ucts and equipment. Following the conference, wine export agent Melba Allen of OENO-COM France will present a two-day Wine Sensory Analysis Workshop organized by VESTA (the Viticulture Enology Science and Technology Alliance) on March 11 and 12. Participants will be awarded a certificate. For additional information and to register, go to easternwineryex- position.com. Members of 26 indus- try associations and organizations receive a 10% discount on their EWE registration. —Linda Jones McKee Eastern Winery Exposition program director Richard Leahy introduces speakers.
