CONFERENCE day of oak education Cara Morrison Chardonnay Winemaker, Sonoma Cutrer Vineyards Tasting Lab: Cooperage style and Matching Oak to Terroir Morrison has worked at wineries in Australia, Chile and New York and studied in New Zealand, Eastern Eu- rope, Italy, Germany and France. She brings this world of experi- ence to her oak trials. Morrison will lead a tasting of wines fer- mented and aged in barrels that were built by different French coopers with wood from the same forest that Sonoma Cutrer has sourced logs from for years. Jeff Cohn Owner and Winemaker, JC Cellars Questioning the Coopers Cohn will moderate a panel discussion with coopers to explore current wood pricing, barrel technology and market trends. A vet- eran winemaker known for his enthusiastic use of barrels, Cohn was in charge of winemaking and barrel purchasing at Rosenblum Cellars before starting his own winery, Jeff Cohn Cel- lars, in Oakland, Calif. A self-professed oak (and yeast) fanatic, he has often presented articles and talks on the subject for better industry education. PANELISTS: Questioning the Coopers Phil Burton Owner, Barrel Builders A woodworker since the 1970s, Burton became an apprentice cooper in 1974 and has now been a cooper for more than 40 years at Barrel Builders. Vincent Bouchard General Manager, Bouchard Cooperages Bouchard is the exporter for ve cooperages, an oak alternatives supplier and an expert on barrel quality and the cooper- age craft. Guillaume Maugeais Production Manager, Tonnellerie Radoux USA Maugeais is a master cooper who has over- seen the production of barrels for several French cooperages in the United States for years. Galina Seabrook Winemaker and Oak Infusion Specialist, Innerstave Tasting Lab: Using Oak Ad- juncts for Specifi c Winemaking Goals Seabrook is a native of Bulgaria, where she began her enology and winemaking ca- reer. After working in Europe and Australia, she came to the U.S. in 1997 to work for Jack- son Family Wines.
