John Kane launches brand Winemaker John Kane has launched his own brand, JCK Wine Co. Kane has worked in winemak- ing for 20 years, and 15 of those were at Rosenblum Cellars. The inaugural release of JCK Wine Co. includes a red Rhône blend, Zinfandel blend and vineyard- designate Zinfandel. CAWG elects board The California Association of Wine- grape Growers in Sacramento, Calif., announced the election of five new officers and three new members to its board of directors. The new board started its term of service Dec. 1. The following members were elected officers: Aaron Lange of LangeTwins Winery & Vineyards, chair; Bill Berryhill of Berryhill Family Vineyards and BB Vineyards, vice chair; Brad Goehring of Goehring Vineyards, vice chair; Mike Testa of Coastal Vineyard Care Associates, secre- tary, and Ryan Metzler of Fruita del Sol, treasurer. New additions to the board include Kendall Hoxsey- Onysko, of Napa Wine Co. and Yount Mill Vineyards, Randy Krag of Beckstoffer Vineyards and Tyler Scheid of Scheid Vineyards. NORTHWEST Promotions at King Estate King Estate Winery of Eugene, Ore., announced the promotion of Spencer Spetnagel to associate winemaker and Barrett Rosteck to assistant winemaker. Spetnagel joined King Estate as cellar lead in 2012 and had been assistant wine- maker since July 2014. He studied winemaking at Lincoln University in New Zealand and has more than a decade of winemaking experience. Rosteck joined King Estate in 2013 and has 13 years of experience in winemaking and brewing in New Zealand and Oregon. He studied food and fermentation sciences at Oregon State University. His most recent position at King Estate was cellar master. CENTRAL Winery releases sparkling Marquette Chankaska Creek Ranch and Winery in Kasota, Minn., released a new sparkling wine produced with Marquette grapes. The wine is the first sparkling varietal wine produced with the cultivar developed at the University of Minnesota. Marquette is a cross between MN 1094 and Ravat 262 and is somewhat similar to Pinot Noir. Chankaska produced the DewDrop Sparkling Marquette in the methode champenoise style, and it finished with 1% residual sugar, a TA of 10.4 g/L and 12.5% alcohol. North Dakota provides grants for vineyards The Agricultural Products Utiliza- tion Commission of the North Dakota Department of Commerce is awarding matching-fund grants to help state residents develop new wineries and vineyards. Deb Kinzel, who owns Fluffy Fields Vineyard in Dickinson, N.D., with her husband Kevin, told Wines & Vines that they are using the grant money, which totaled $60,952.50, to create a business plan, conduct a winery feasibility study and de- velop a marketing plan including a logo and a website. For the APUC program, the categories of market- ing, utilization and basic and ap- plied research have a 3:1 matching fund ratio, but there is no maxi- mum amount that an applicant can request.
