WineEast In their words Another valuable book about the Finger Lakes wine region is Summer in a Glass: The Coming of Age of Winemaking in the Finger Lakes by Evan Dawson. In 12 chapters, Dawson focuses on profiles of winemakers who are responsible for bringing the Finger Lakes into prominence as a wine region of the world. Many of the chapters are devoted to names that will be familiar not only to readers in New York state but elsewhere in the East. Some of those included are Johannes Reinhardt, winemaker at Anthony Road Wine Co.; David Whiting, winemaker and co-owner of Red Newt Cellars; Morten Hallgren, winemaker and co-owner of Ravines Wine Cellars, and John Ingle, CEO at Heron Hill Winery. One chapter covers both John McGregor and his father Robert McGregor, founder of McGregor Vineyard. Two wineries are represented in two different chapters. Hermann J. Wiemer, the founder of the winery bearing his name, has a chapter of his own—as does Fred Merwarth, who purchased the winery from Wiemer. Fox Run Vineyards has one chapter devoted to winemaker Peter Bell and another to Bell's assistant winemaker Tricia Renshaw, described as "the prodigy next door." Others included are Dr. Konstantin Frank's descendants, Willy and Fred Frank; a grower, Sam Argetsinger, and Tom Aftek_Sept08.qxp 7/31/08 2:48 PM Page - SIHA YEAST - and Susan Higgins of Heart & Hands Wine Co. A 13th chapter, titled "The Tierce Brothers," is the story of winemakers from three different wineries, Johannes Reinhardt, David Whiting and Peter Bell, who decided to combine their talents to make a single wine, Tierce Riesling. A word should be said about the author and the way the book was written. Evan Dawson is a morning news anchor at a Rochester, N.Y., television station and also the managing editor of the popular website "New York Cork Report." When he committed himself to writing the book, he made the decision to work at every job in a winery, and he did just that at a number of wineries. His book focuses on the personas of the winemakers involved, and the many quotations used in the book were the result of several hundred hours of taped conversations. The winemakers knew they were being recorded and, while the wordings were cleaned up, the meanings were never changed. This is an important book, highly readable and not too technical. The wineries and winemakers included are definitely contributing to the new age of winemaking in the Finger Lakes. Summer in a Glass is published by Sterling Publishing Co. Inc. and is priced at $19.95. WE Wines & Vines OCTOBeR 2011 55 O AK ALTERNATIVES - BECOPAD - DECAN TERILE FILTRATION - WATER FILTRATIO T E R CENTRIFUGES - S N
