October's Contributors "T Tim Patterson he guy with the hat," Tim Patterson, writes the Inquiring Winemaker column for each issue of Wines & Vines. In addition to writing his column about seed tannins (page 56) in this issue, Patterson also visits Rock Wall Wine Co. (page 28) to see how a family chose to outfit its new winery in an unusual location. This Technical Review de- tails equipment and processes Shauna and Kent Rosenblum use in their winery at the former Alameda (Calif.) Naval Air Station. Jane Firstenfeld ines & Vines contributing editor Jane Firstenfeld covers wine packaging sev- eral times per year. In this issue (page 42), she describes three scenarios in which wineries are using great package design to shape brand images and help their products stand out. First, L'Ecole No. 41 updates its label; then, an entrepreneur invents a reusable package to W dress up boxed wines. In the third example, wineries find screen printing bottles to be a viable solution, even for short runs. Mark Chien n the final part of his series about viticul- ture in cool to cold climates (page 50), Mark Chien doesn't varnish the truth about the difficulties of growing quality winegrapes in Eastern North America. The viticulture extension educator for the Penn State Coop- erative Extension says that to continually re- place parts of vines and whole vines that are I damaged by cold and disease is a necessity in Eastern vineyards, perhaps more than in any other fine-wine region. Glenn McGourty robably every grower and winemaker knows that leafroll disease is spread- ing in vineyards from California to New York. Wines & Vines has covered the subject many times, warning growers about the dangers of the red-leaf-inducing virus and helping winemakers understand how to cope with it when they must. In this P issue, bi-monthly Grounded Grapegrowing columnist Glenn McGourty gives helpful and straightforward answers to 10 questions about leafroll virus (page 60). October's Cover Cellar staff from Rock Wall Wine Co. in Alameda, Calif., crushed 40 tons of wine- grapes Sept. 9, including this bin of Zinfan- del from Jesse's Vineyard in Contra Costa County. Bins of fresh-picked fruit filled the cold room at Rock Wall, and even more were lined up on the winery floor (right).
