Keller will direct the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture and Catalyst: Discovery into Practice, ASEV's upcom- ing publication, which will focus on the translation of research into practice. NGWI president to leave organization Jean-Mari Peltier stepped down from the post of president of the National Grape & Wine Initiative to take a job with a consulting firm. Peltier has been pres- ident of the Sacramento- based NGWI since 2008. "Jean-Mari's leadership will be missed, but her record of achievement at NGWI leaves the organization on very solid ground," NGWI chairman John Aguirre said in a statement announcing Peltier's departure. New counsel at Wine Institute Tracy Genesen is the new vice president and gen- eral counsel of the Wine Institute in San Francisco. Genesen replaces Wen- dell Lee, who is retiring after working with the institute for 35 years. Be- fore joining the institute, Genesen was counsel to Edrington Americas, the North American arm of a Scotland-based distilled spirits producer. Formerly a partner in two major law firms with a special- ized wine, beer and spirits practice, Genesen has di- rected a variety of complex multi-district federal court litigations that focused on constitutional law matters and challenges to state al- cohol regulatory statutes. 404 vineyard owners in Mendocino A census by the Men- docino Winegrowers Inc. found that the county in California's North Coast re- gion is home to 404 sepa- rate owners of 570 vineyard properties. The county's total vineyard acreage is 18,904. The average vine- yard size in the county is 14 acres planted to just one grape variety. More than 20% of all the vine- yards are certified through California Certified Organic Farmers, and nearly 50% are certified through Fish Friendly Farming. New keynote for DtC symposium The organizers of the 2016 DtC Wine Symposium that takes place Jan. 13-14 at the Hilton Concord Hotel in Concord announced an additional keynote presentation called "Art of the Marketing Plan." The new session will be moderated by Brian Baker, the vice president of sales and marketing for Chateau Montelena, and features Dave Knox, chief media of- ficer for Rockfish; Edward Russell, professor of ad- vertising at Syracuse Uni- versity, and Lynne Bruni, vice president of marketing at the San Francisco Travel Association. NORTHWEST B.C. ice wine gets under way The British Columbia Wine Institute reported that 20 wineries planned to pro- duce ice wine as freezing temperatures arrived in the Okanagan on Nov. 25 and 26. The ice wine harvest is expected to yield 722 tons from 169 acres, ac- cording to a statement released by the institute. This is the third ice wine harvest to begin earlier than normal in November.
