February's Contributors I Glenn McGourty n the past two years, three Wines & Vines columnists and staff members have pub- lished books about wine and viticulture. The author of the Grounded Grapegrowing column, Glenn McGourty, now boosts the total to four. McGourty is an author and the technical editor of a major new viticulture manual published by the University of California. Fifteen authors contributed to the "Organic Winegrowing Manual," which McGourty believes may be the most important UC reference work on grapegrowing since the last revision of "General Viticulture" in the 1970s. McGourty wrote several sections of this down-to-earth, how-to guide. Clark Smith O ur Postmodern Winemaking columnist, Clark Smith, really earned his pay while visiting Milan, Italy, in November to cover the giant biannual SIMEI winery equipment trade show. Smith filed stories with the speed and enthusiasm of a foreign correspondent for Reuters (which he isn't) but with the sensibility of a winemaker and longtime winery technology in- novator (which he is). He banged out three news reports based on SIMEI for our Headlines section on winesandvines.com; then, after returning home to Sonoma County, he composed his column for this issue (page 56) about the most interesting innovations for the winery and vineyard that he observed among thousands of products and services exhibited. Smith calls these his "showstop- pers" from SIMEI and shares why he thinks they will move the industry forward. Fritz Westover A few years ago, the Wines & Vines staff tasted a dry white wine that Haak Vine- yards & Winery of Santa Fe, Texas, made from Blanc Du Bois. Having hardly heard of the grape at the time, we were pleasantly sur- prised at how familiar and appealing it tasted. In his piece on page 75, Fritz Westover ex- plains that this relatively new variety is catching on in Texas and the southeast due to its resistance to Pierce's disease and favor- able flavor profile. Westover works for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service (Texas A&M) as viticulture program specialist for the Texas Gulf Coast region and supervises three extension program specialists as part of a statewide effort to provide programs and hands-on viticulture workshops for the Texas wine industry. February's Cover This month's cover image was captured by David A. Jeffrey, owner and winemaker at Calluna Vineyards in Windsor, Calif., who ferments some of his red wine in French oak barrels. Winemakers using the laborious method say it produces smoother wines with excellent tannin structure. Read more about fermenting in barrels starting on page 24. 4 Wines & Vines FeBRUARY 2012 A Member of Wine Communications Group Inc.
