The hypothesis in the second case is that the signal molecule will be transported from the rootstock into the scion and prevent Xf from causing PD. PD-resistant Dr. Andy Walker, a UC Davis grape breed- er, is using conventional breeding tech- niques to develop PD-resistant vinifera cultivars. A while ago Dr. Walker found a PD-resistant Vitis with single-gene re- sistance to PD. Using gene marker tech- niques, Dr. Walker developed a process to go from seed to seed in a two-year cycle, greatly speeding up the time it takes to develop Vitis vinifera cultivars resistant to PD. He initially crossbred the PD-resis- tant Vitis strain with V. vinifera and then, through a series of back-crossings using the two-year seed to seed cycle, has now developed material that is 97% vinifera and also PD resistant. This material can now be used to cross Lateral tying and training of trellised vines and trees. Field trials of these crosses have progressed to the point where they are be- ginning to get enough fruit to make small wine lots so that tastings and full chemical analyses of the wines can be done. Field testing of this material is being done in Napa Valley, Texas and Alabama. It is great to see the progress being made by the researchers funded by the PDCP with industry dollars. Nevertheless, it will still be quite a while before a reliable and affordable management program for PD is ready for commercial implementation. In the meantime, it is absolutely critical that programs remain in place to keep GWSS from spreading to new areas in California. Because the control programs for GWSS have been so successful, many growers in the community feel the GWSS/ PD problem has been solved. This is only a short-term solution, however, which will keep PD spread in check until a long- term management program for PD has been developed.
