MARCH NEWS CENTRAL Winery planned for Chicago Owners of City Winery in New York an- nounced plans to open a second location in Chicago. The winery, scheduled to open this summer, will be located in a 30,000-square- foot former warehouse and feature a restau- rant, concert hall and private event space. Details: citywinery.com/chicago. EAST New director for Arkansas ag station Clarence E. Watson is the new director of the Arkansas Ag- ricultural Experi- ment Station. Wat- son also will hold the title of associate vice president-re- search in the Divi- sion of Agriculture. Before joining the University of Arkansas, Watson had been the associate director and chief operating officer of the Oklahoma Agricultural Ex- periment Station since 2006. Details: aaes. uark.edu. Clarence Watson Smith named va. grower of the year Jeanette Smith was honored with the 2012 Grower of the Year award at the Virginia Vineyards Association's annual Technical Meeting and Trade Show on Feb. 3 in Charlottesville, Va. Smith began working in Virginia vineyards in 1981, while studying horticulture at Virginia Tech. In addition to being a member of the Virginia Wine Advisory Board, Smith has been education and research committee chair for the Virginia Vineyards Associa- tion. Smith is also the founder of VineSmith Vineyard Services. Details: vinesmith.com. Funds for grape research The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved a grant of $515,000 for the Kentucky Vineyard Society to main- tain the Viticulture Extension and Re- search Program through fiscal year 2014. The funding will pay for an extension viticulture specialist, enologist and techni- cians. The program is intended to provide growers and winemakers with a variety of technical assistance. Horse Creek Horse Creek Winery expands Horse Creek Winery has expanded and opened a tasting room, retail store and event center in Sparks, Ga. The new, 12,000-square-foot building is located on more than 10 acres that are home to 3 acres of Muscadine vines.
